10 PERFECT PICNIC SAMMIES

Is there any better way to spend a summer day in Southern California with your family? “Let’s GO! NOW!” They begged. Hmmmm. I was not prepared. I threw some chips and sandwiches and Capri-Suns in the basket and we headed to the park a block up the street. It was the maiden voyage for my out dated basket. We found a huge patch of shade and set up. It was so simple, and the kids loved it! They now ask to go on picnics nearly every day. Sometimes we set up in the front yard, sometimes in the back yard. It prompted me to find some great picnicking spots and take out restaurants in Orange County. Whether you like to plan a surf day with the family, relax and explore a big shady park with hiking and biking trails, or just take in a simple breathtaking view, there is a nearby picnic spot waiting for you. If you fancy music and dancing with your picnicking, don’t forget to check city websites to find free family concerts in the park.

Of course there are hundreds of great picnic spots and places to grab food, but I’ve compiled a few favorites. Summer is ending but it’s not too late to get out there and picnic! So grab your old school wicker basket, cooler, backpack or whatever floats your boat and enjoy the day! Oh and don’t forget to pack your family!

Of course, for our wedding we got a state of the
art picnic backpack complete with a built in
cooler, wine opener and cheese board, so we
used it instead, while my cute large straw basket gathered cobwebs in the garage.

So that day when my kids found the basket and
asked what it was, I had the opportunity to introduce them to the concept of a picnic. “It’s when you pack some food, head outside (anywhere!), lay a blanket down and eat and just simply enjoy the day.” I explained. Pretty simple, really.

My kids have recently discovered the joy of a simple picnic. One day they spotted a huge picnic basket that I had picked up at a garage sale years ago. My husband laughed when I brought it home, long before we had kids. I have to admit, it is not the most practical thing in this day and age. It is cumbersome, made out of straw, has all the plates and utensils buckled in, has no cooler capabilities, and really doesn’t fit all that much. But boy is it cute! It’s a PICNIC basket! With cute fabric lining! Every household needs one, right? “We WILL use this someday! When we go on a picnic as a family,” I pledged.picnic-melon
