The Mid-Summer Boredom Blues

When your kids are out of school for summer break, things can become hectic. Schedules are thrown off, friends are out of reach, and over the course of those few months, “I’m bored!” is increasingly heard in homes all across the nation.

Once those ‘mid-summer boredom blues’ set in, they can be difficult to beat. Luckily, there are options available to you in Orange County, CA that can help your kids alleviate their boredom (and save your sanity, too).

The best summer days can, of course, be spent outdoors. You needn’t spend a lot of money to take your kids somewhere that they can learn and enjoy their time. A few low-cost things that you can do in O.C. in good weather include:

  • Your local Farmer’s Market-  Allowing your children to see where the food we eat comes from, and meet the people who grow it, can take care of several tasks at once. The parents can purchase fresh, healthy vegetables and fruits (these are often organic, even if not certified- feel free to ask what, if any, chemical products are used in the growing of the produce you purchase). You also stand a better chance of getting your children to actually eat those fruits and vegetables, if they can meet and talk to the farmers that grew it- asking questions, and making them feel more connected to the veggies. It is also great exercise, and an excellent opportunity to spend some time walking with your family.
  • Take a trip on the Balboa Island Ferry- A lovely and scenic tour to Balboa Island, this is a wonderful way for you and your family to spend a day over the summer vacation. At $2.00 or less per person, you can travel to the island, and enjoy your time on the gorgeous Newport Beach, named one of America’s Top 10 Beaches, by both the Surfrider Foundation and the Travel Channel.
  • If your children are interested in learning to fish or in whale-watching, Dana Wharf Sportfishing & Whale Watching is an exciting place, that they will thank you for taking them. With their fun whale-watching activities and informative (free) Fishing Clinic for Kids, this is a good boredom-buster for any junior (or senior) mariners out there.
  • If you and your kids just need to get out of the city for the day, try taking a day trip to Long Beach. From sightseeing and window-shopping in the Belmont Shore boutiques, to aquariums and dinner cruises, a day or weekend trip to Long Beach could be exactly what your kids need to break the boredom. Who knows? You might have fun there, too.

Less economical, but still an excellent and somewhat obvious choice, is any one of the multiple amusement parks, practically right on your doorstep. Orange County features amusement parks for all ages, such as:

  • Disney California Adventure Park- ‘the place where dreams come true’ is a timeless classic, and one that will leave the entire family satisfied
  • LEGOLAND California – with a waterpark, the Sealife Aquarium, and plenty of rides for all ages, LEGOLAND is a great choice for an exciting summer day.
  • Knott’s Berry Farm- located in Buena Park, Knott’s is a fantastic place with rides and fun for the whole family.
  • Universal Studios Hollywood- a trip to Universal makes for an exciting, fun, amazing learning experience for kids of all ages, and parents, too. Explore how your favorite movies were made, and enjoy rides based on some of the most popular movies ever.

With all of these options, your children’s ‘mid-summer boredom blues’ will melt away like their ice cream cones, turning those “I’m bored!” moments into exclamations of “Thanks, Mom! Now I’ll go clean my room!”

Well, maybe not- but at least they won’t be bored.
